Swiss Knowledge Network with outposts in:
Swissnex Shanghai, Switzerland's outpost for science, technology and culture in China, is an initiative of the Swiss State Secretariat for Education and Research of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Similar institutions are located in Boston, San Francisco and Singapore. Our goal is to fully exploit the potential of cooperation between Switzerland and the respective host countries in the fields of higher education, research, technology, innovation and culture and to promote Switzerland as a leading country in those domains.
 

Sino Swiss Science & Technology Cooperation Program

The SSSTC program is a governmental framework between China and Switzerland. It aims to encourage and strengthen individual contacts by building a multi-level research cooperation between institutions, research groups as well as individuals.

The goals for the action phase of SSSTC are to:

  • Strengthen the academic ties between Switzerland and China through research and academic collaborations
  • Increase the visibility of Swiss universities and research institutions in China through faculty and student exchange
  • Encourage long term institutional cooperation between Swiss and Chinese education and research institutions

Partners

Based on the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) which was signed by Switzerland and China for close S&T coopeartion, the SSSTC program has been enjoying the strong support of the governmental S&T agencies in both countries:

• In Switzerland: State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER)

• In China: Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)

The SSSTC program is seeking for synergies and support of other Chinese and Swiss ministries, local Chinese S&T authorities, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) as well as Swiss and Chinese private industries.

 

Funding Instruments

Three funding instruments are designed to cover different need of Swiss and Chinese scientists for initiation or strengthening scientific contact:

• Faculty Exchange and Student Exchange (FE and SE) intended to provide opportunities for first and individual contact

• Institutional Partnership (IP) aims to tighten the links between two research institutes through a long term exchange program

• Joint Research Project (JRP) is designed to build up an in-depth scientific collaboration between scientists of the two countries, in 4 priority areas:

                  ⇒ Life sciences /biotechnology

                  ⇒ Environment/urban development and sustainability

                  ⇒ Materials science

                  ⇒ Medicinal science

 

Awarded Projects

So far, there have been several calls for proposal launched in Switzerland and China. For the period of 2008 to 2011, the single call for proposal of Joint Research Projects was placed in July 2008. 76 JRP's were submitted. The call for proposal of Institutional Partnership in September 2008 attracted 11 pairs of institutes to define their long term collaboration plans and last but not least, two calls (September 2008 and March 2009) for exchange grant generated 28 applications.

Up to now, a total of 25 Joint Research Projects6 Institutional Partnership programs, 5 exchange plans in 2008 and 17 exchange plans in 2009 have been awarded by the SSSTC grant.
