The long-term goal of Swissnex Shanghai is to establish a network of promising young Swiss and Chinese scientists, a solid base for innovative, bottom-up cooperation in the future. One instrument for realizing this goal is “Scouts”. “Scouts” is a network of 25 to 30 Chinese professors in selected research fields around China, mandated to provide periodical overviews on what’s going on in the scientific fields they are asked to cover. In addition, they will look out for brilliant young Chinese interested in spending some time at Swiss universities. Once a year, the pre-selected candidates, a true elite of Chinese Ph.D.s and post docs, will gather at Swissnex Shanghai where they will be interviewed by interested Swiss institutions. At the same gathering, the participating “scouts” will present their overview, reporting on the latest developments.
Effective January 2008, Swissnex is running a six-month test with six scouts in six research fields (microelectronics, inorganic chemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering/new materials, linguistics/science of arts and architecture/urbanism). If the result is positive, the whole antenna system will be established by the end of the year.
